ATEX in Agricultural Facilities

These are agricultural holdings in which the collection, first processing and storage of agricultural products (cereals, fodder, vegetables) is carried out and livestock is raised.

Biogas generation facilities are used on some agricultural farms. In the event of leaks, explosive biogas/air mixtures may form. Forage dehydrators, almond hullers and other similar installations generate explosive atmospheres.

Explosion risk

There may be a risk of explosion due to the presence of combustible dusts in places where cereals, forage or legumes are dried, stored, processed or handled. These places must be classified according to the criteria indicated in Standard UNE-EN 60079-10, evaluating the presence and extension of zones 20, 21 and 22. Normally zone 20 is constituted by the internal volume of the machinery used in the process, elevation and handling of agricultural products and fertilizers. Zones 21 are those immediately adjacent to said machines; The rest of the area bordering these zones (covering a few meters), where an occasional presence of dusty atmospheres may occur, must be classified as zone 22.
