ATEX in Paint/Enamel Sections

These are sections in which surface glazing operations are carried out with a liquid paint spray gun that contains flammable solvents that, in contact with air, can form explosive atmospheres.

The spray mist formed during such operations, as well as the solvent vapors released, can cause an explosive atmosphere in contact with air. Powdery pigments can be very explosive.

Explosion risk

The areas around the spray gun and drying enamelled objects represent the emission sources. They are classified depending on the most dangerous components of the paints used, according to the method indicated in the UNE EN 60079-10 Standard. As a general rule, the ambient ventilation air flow rate should not be less than 60 m3 /h per liter/h of sprayed paint. In this case, the interior of the glazing and drying cabins are considered Zone 1, or if the place is large, the areas around the emission source for a safety distance of 2-3 m. If the ventilation is of a medium degree with a good margin, the rest of the site can be classified as Zone 2.
